Ira William Russell, Sr

Jun. 12, 1921 - Nov. 12, 2011

Ira William Russell, Sr., age 90, of Millersburg, died on Saturday November 12, 2011 at Golden Beach Manor in Ocqueoc Township.  On June 12, 1921 in Ocqueoc, Michigan, Ira was born to Henry Sr. and Mabel Ann (Price) Russell.  He married Esther Hilliker on January 1, 1946 in Midland, Michigan.  They were married for 43 years when Esther died on January 30, 1989.  After Esther's death Ira met Jean Taylor Carter and they were married on March 20, 1993 in Waterford.  They lived in Rochester Hills before moving to Millersburg in 1995. 

In 1953 Ira moved from Onaway to Clarkston and went to work as a grinder operator at Pontiac Motors.  He retired in 1985 after 32 years. 

Ira enjoyed the simple things in life.  He loved nature and the outdoors.  He enjoyed watching the birds as they came to the feeder, going for rides in the country to look for deer, and spending time outside working in the yard.  He liked camping and was a member of the Michigan Motor Home Club.  During the years that he lived in Clarkston he enjoyed spending vacations and holidays in Onaway.   

Ira served his country during World War II.  As a Private in the U.S. Army, Ira was in New Guinea, Bismarck Archipelago, Southern Philippines, and Luzon. He was honorably discharged on November 30, 1945.  He was very proud of being a veteran and was a lifetime member of the Millersburg VFW Post.

Surviving are Ira's wife, Jean of Millersburg; daughter, Mabel Kumpula of Pontiac; sons, Ira William. Jr. (Judy) of Holly, Henry (Patricia) of Pontiac, and Randy (Sherry) Russell of Arizona; step-son, Joe (Lavonne) Carter of Waterford;step-daughter, Lynn Carter of Indianapolis, IN; numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; as well as, a very special niece, Treva Stoner and her family of Onaway.  Ira was preceded in death by his first wife, Esther (nee Hilliker); sisters, Dorothy Wright, Irene Stoner, Vena Guy, Lena Belle Russell; and brother, Homer Henry Russell.

Visitation will be held at the Chagnon Funeral Home on Wednesday Nov. 16, 2011 from 4 pm - 8 pm with a Veteran's Service by VFW Post 5857 to he held at 7 p.m.  The funeral service will be at the Chagnon Funeral Home on Thursday November 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.  Elder Billie Morgan will officiate.  Ira's final resting place will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Onaway.  The family has asked that in lieu of flowers donations be made to Golden Beach Manor Adult Foster Care Home, Hospice of the Sunrise Shore, or to Vital Care.
